The Titanic

100 years ago this morning, 15 April 1912, the world awoke to the astounding news that overnight the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. She was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage. One of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, she was built between 1909–11 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. She carried 2,223 people

King House 2012 Events Launch

Season of Events Launch: Last night's well-attended, King House 2012 Events Launch was a very informative, well-structured event that left me feeling certain that Roscommon County Council is committed to making best efforts to ensure a positive future for our beautiful King House. Thanks to Roscommon County Council executives, in association with national and local interested groups, we now have a programme of planned events for each of the months April through September 2012.
• Positive plans and hopes for the future of King House were expressed by speakers Co Manager Frank Dawson, Directors of Services Kathleen Martin and Richie Farrell as well as Mayor Eugene Murphy. "Local involvement and ownership" was an imperative from each speaker so that King house can move from strength to strength.
• Present at the Launch were Roscommon Co Manager Frank Dawson, Roscommon Mayor Eugene Murphy, Services Directors Richie Farrell and Kathleen Martin, Adminstrative Officers Mary Mullins and Úna Ní Chuinn, Members of Roscommon Co Council, Boyle Mayor Jane Suffin and fellow Town Cllrs, Boyle Chamber of Commerce Presidents Ciaran O'Connor and Siobhan Gallagher, representatives of Boyle Groups and several interested individuals.
• Photos [here...]

Boyle's Tourism Potential

I have frequently referred to Boyle's Tourism Potential.
It remains a mystery to me as to why more is not made of the beautifully poignant, locally based Legend of Úna Bhán [here...]
• A long term plan for expansion of the "Lough Key Experience" could include buying and refurbishing Castle Island on a phased basis that would allow for having it as a venue to which a people-carrier boat could ferry visitors to enjoy daytime/night-time meal and dramatic re-enactment, with song story and dance of the Legend of Úna Bhán ...our own "Bunratty Castle"
• An interim suggestion might be that the Moylurg Rockingham Company develop its existing, almost redundant "Moylurg Room" in the Visitor Centre to house an Úna Bhán re-enactment either live or on a screen.
• "Dream on" you might say, but if Ros Co Co can get €18 million for new offices in Roscommon town, then anything is possible in a spirit of good will towards Boyle

Boyle Courthouse - Public Meeting

A Public Meeting was held in St. Joseph's Resource Centre, Abbeytown last night with an agenda to discuss the future of the building. Members of the public and local politicians attended as well as Boyle groups to air views and ideas.
• This initial meeting was chaired jointly by Town Cllr Frank Geelan and Mayor Jane Suffin. It was established that Roscommon Co Council own the building.
• Roscommon Co Cllr John Cummins said he spoke with Co Manager Frank Dawson earlier in the day who told him the Council did not have funds to do anything with the building but would be delighted to give technical assistance to a Boyle committee prepared to manage future use of this historic building.
• A committee was formed that will shortly seek to arrange talks with the Co. Manager, Heritage Officer and others to find out what may or may not be done with the building. From ideas suggested last night and others that may come forward, costings will be established, funding will be sought and the building opened with a new agenda for the benefit of the area.

The Mighty Apple

Boyle Parochial School pupils will have iPads shortly!
• "Biting the apple" led por old Adam into all kinds of mischief and subesquent trouble in the Garden of Eden. Nowadays we associate apple with the world's richest company - Apple Computers.
Many of our schools will "Bite the Apple" (note the capital 'A') quite soon when they install specially designed Apple Computer workstations for docking, recharging and updating its new iPad tablet computers. Pupils will adopt the learning aid as a replacement for many of the school books it uses with a welcome and substantial reduction in school costs for financially-stretched parents.
Hey folks, there's a new generation getting ready to cast us aside!! It's the consumer age ... gotta get me an iPad ...ummmh, MAYBE!!

Frank Feighan responds to HAC

Shannonside FM Radio report: Roscommon South Leitrm TD Frank Feighan responded to the Hospital Action Committee following the TV3 interview last week where he spoke of how his decision to vote with the Government to close Roscommon's A&E led to a threat to his life. Deputy Feighan says threats were made the night before as well as on the day of the vote where he says there was an element in the crowd that did NOT have the interests of the hospital at heart.
• He also says he reported a specific incident of a man threatning to 'put a bullet in his head' to the Gardai but the issue was later resolved after the man apologised.
• The Roscommon TD said HAC Chairman John McDermott was not with him at all times on the day of the vote, and he adds he is happy to furnish Mr McDermott with the name and address of the man who threatened him, if he wants to.

The New Apple tablet computer

For all computer geeks, devotees, students and users, Apple has launched its newest creation, the "New Apple". Don't rush to your local supplier folks, the New Apple doesn't go on sale in the UK until Friday 16th March, and probably soon after in Ireland.
The Late Steve Jobs would have been proud of the New Apple, he said:
• Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.
• Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected.
• Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life...Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

Boyle's One Way System

Boyle has become the butt of jokes and incredulity by both locals and visitors. The frequent visitor question "How did the people of Boyle allow this?" can be answered simply ..."It was foisted on us!" • Paula Cull, owner of Drumderrig House, says "The fact that non residents join in is important. We want our residents to feel that they're part of the community. Just because people are elderly, it doesn't mean they've stopped living or enjoying their favourite pastimes." Playing cards, boules, bingo, keep fit and dancing and music nights are just a few of the many activities Drumderrig's residents have to hand.

L.Key Visitor Centre - Leap Year Night

The night was a first for the Social Committee section of Boyle Town & More. Compliments of Louise Fitzpatrick, Manager of Lough Key Key Forest Park, all were warmly welcomed and guided through the challenges by Anna and her team. Then we were treated a variety of delicious nibbles courtesy of Chef Stephen Coles, so all Lenten promises were happily broken (efforts to be renewed and back on track from today of course !!) Guitarist Liam Fitz was on hand to sing and entertain with a full programme of current and familiar favourites.
• An enthusiastic Boyle Town and More group of over 50 faced the challenge of Boda Borg in Lough Key Visitor Centre last night - Leap Year Night. Those who hadn't been there previously were delighted to note that there is such a fantastic local attraction available for all.
• Consensus at the end of the evening was that more similar events are a must, and I understand the social committee of Boyle Town and More are already planning Event 2 ...Well done and thank you to all involved.

Roadworks in Boyle

Work is nearing completion on the resurfacing of Shop Street / Carrick Road. At the moment, contractors are constructing a new 'Island' at the Carrick Rd / Marian Rd Junction (photo above). The finished island will be smaller than the original, rounded corners and a coloured concrete surface instead of bricks as previously. Pedestrian crossings will be created either side of the Island as safe places for people to cross to the Pleasure Grounds and shops etc.
Soon, badly needed resurfacing will start on Marian Road. I understand there will be one 'flat-top' ramp on the resurface road.
We do not have information yet on when the €750,000 resurfacing
works will start from Main Street to the Rail Station.
Local annoyance is frequently expressed when Roscommon Co Council does not keep the public fully informed on changes to the streetscape. They could easily make such announcements alongside others on the Roscommon Co Co Website. I guess we will just have to 'dream on...'

€750,000 for Boyle street Resurfacing

Boyle Town Council held a specially convened meeting. During the meeting Majella Hunt, Roscommon Director of Services (Roads) informed Boyle Councillors that an additional €750,000 has been allocated for resurfacing streets in Boyle.
This very welcome news follows the €350,000 spend on resurfacing Shop Street. Full details on when and precisely where the new works are to take place will be announced shortly.
Heartiest congratulations to all involved who lobbied for and managed to get what will be a well deserved enhancement to the streets of the 'Town We Love So Well'
Boyle's One-Way System has been referred to as a "blight on the town", "illogical", "laughable" and while detested by Boyle traders, locals and visitors alike, it is set to remain in place. Hopefully those same public servants who serve so well and as best as the can in these difficult times will see fit to abolish the One Way System before too long!
